Here is a spectacular specimen of Stellarocrinus bilineatus from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. We recently acquired this specimen from a major crinoid collection. This specimen was collected in the early 1970s. This location has been closed and filled with water for the last 20 plus years. This crinoid is very 3-dimensional. It displays excellent plate structure. The plates comprising the small cup are extremely nodose and stellate. The biserial arms are very tightly articulated (unusual for this location) and curl inward at the top of the crown. The spiked anal tube extends above the arms and a GASTROPOD is attached to the anal opening. A long, articulated stem is attached to the crinoid. It is highly unusual to get this much stem on a crinoid from this location. The pinkish-white color of the fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. The crinoid is well positioned on the rounded limestone slab. It has been said by some that the crinoids from this site may be the best Pennsylvanian crinoids in the world. This is, simply, a gorgeous irreplaceable specimen of an unusual crinoid.
