Here is an uncommon crinoid. This is Decadocrinus stellatus from the Mississippian of Indiana. This type of inadunate crinoid has a small, bowl-shaped cup composed of highly sculpted plates and long, uniserial arms that branch only once. This specimen exhibits these characteristics in fine fashion. This crinoid usually is preserved with the arms broken off short or sometimes entirely missing. Not this example! This 3-dimensional specimen has the long arms wonderfully intact and displays the short, stout pinnules of the arms beautifully. A section of the pentagonal stem is still tightly attached to the cup. The crinoid has good color and contrast. It is well presented on the somewhat rounded plate of siltstone that also contains a set of arms from another type of crinoid. This is a great example of this scarce species of Decadocrinus from Crawfordsville, Indiana.
