Here is a very interesting echinoderm specimen from the famous Mississippian beds near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This is a large, very inflated example of Actinocrinites gibsoni. This type of camerate crinoid has a large cup with heavily ornamented plates and long, branching, biserial arms that display fine pinnules. This crinoid is extremely intriguing. There are two regenerated arms on the right side of the crinoid. On the left side of the crinoid are some arms that are swollen in places and have probably been attacked by a parasite. Another echinoderm, Onychaster flexilis, is wrapped around the anal tube of the crinoid. One dark arm of the brittle star is easily seen between the arms of the crinoid. A section of stem is still tightly attached to the cup. This crinoid has nice color and contrast. It is wonderfully centered on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a great example of Actinocrinites that also has a story to tell.
